Progress on college buildings

Guests were invited to tour a new multi-million pound education centre being built in Dewsbury.

Work is progressing on Kirklees College’s Springfield Centre, which will offer vocational courses for young people, when it opens in the town next year. A bolt-marking ceremony was held to celebrate the development last week.

It will form part of a new Dewsbury Learning Quarter, which will also include the historic Pioneer House, currently being transformed into a centre for higher level skills, apprenticeships and post-19 studies.

Naz Parkar, Kirklees Council’s strategic director of economy and infrastructure said: “The Springfield Centre and the redeveloped Pioneer House site will provide young people with the necessary skills to compete for the high quality jobs that will be on offer in the future.

“It will also bring 2,500 students closer to the town centre, providing town centre businesses with increased footfall on a daily basis.”

The two new buildings, funded through the Leeds City Region, Kirklees Council, The DewsburyTownscape Heritage Initiative and The Heritage Lottery, will replace the college’s current Dewsbury centre and the Batley School of Art.

Kirklees College principal Marie Gilluley said: “We are really looking forward to the contribution the college is going to be able to make with these new buildings and I am sure it will take us forward into a vibrant and successful future.”
