PUPILS at a Gomersal school are battling it out to see who will be their all-conkering champ!
Gomersal Primary is running a conker competition as part of a fund-raiser linked to the Movember charity.
Teachers Phil Etchells and Adam Hanslip have been growing moustaches to raise money for research into male cancers, and hit on a novel way of boosting their funds.
Mr Etchells said: “As well as Movember, this month is also conker season, so we thought it would be a fun idea to start a conker championship.
“We are holding supervised sessions and showing the children how to play conkers. Unfortunately there is a myth that you shouldn’t play conkers because it’s dangerous, but that’s rubbish.
“It’s something we all grew up with and the parents are very supportive because it’s something they loved to play as well when they were young.”
Headteacher David Warbrick said: “They are absolutely loving it. It will run over three weeks and ultimately we will have our all conkering champion!”
