THE skies above Spen Valley Sports College were filled with balloons as pupils remembered a much respected teacher who died last month.

Allan Giles, who taught resistant materials, had been at the school since it was created in the merger of Heckmondwike and Liversedge Secondary Schools in 1993.

Deputy headteacher Diane McConnell said: “We decided to hold a memorial service for years 10/11. Some members of Allan’s tutor group sang, recited poems and read out tributes. Members of staff also read poems and tributes. After the service Allan’s tutor group went onto the school field where they each released a white balloon.

“The service was a fitting tribute to a well loved and respected teacher. Allan would have been proud of the students in his tutor group”.
