Rugby fan Ian Stuart will be lacing up his running shoes to help improve facilities at his village club.

Ian is a committee member at Birkenshaw ARLFC which recently had a funding bid for a new changing room at its East Bierley ground turned down.

“This was despite a very clear need for some funding,” he said.

“We currently have plastic sheeting covering a few holes in the roof. But despite that, we have all rallied around to paint and patch what we can to try and get another year’s life out of the changing room.

“So have decided to try and raise the money ourselves.”

Despite the poor changing facilities, the club is thriving, with an open age side in the Pennine league and three junior sides, most of whom are local to the Birkenshaw and East Bierley area.

Ian will be running the Dublin Marathon later this month.

“Instead of just the normal sponsor money, we have decided to add a little twist where people can predict the time that I finish the course. So a £5 donation will give that person a chance to win a prize of £100,” he said.

There is also a ladies’ night tomorrow at Birkenshaw Liberal Club and a race night in November. To donate or have a guess visitwww.pitchero.com/clubs/birkenshawarlfc/contact-form/. Sponsor forms at Birkenshaw Liberal Club.
