Well wishers have been leaving flowers, notes and photographs in tribute to a well loved donkey who has died.

Lacey, the 26-year-old female donkey who lived at Hunsworth Lodge Farm in Hunsworth died last month.

Her owner, farmer Jack Hughes, said people had been coming to leave presents in tribute to Lacey.

He said: “Lacey was born here – she and her mother Cagney were the second generation of donkeys we had – I got them when my daughters were little and they are in their 40s now. Cagney died about five years ago. People have been putting flowers and pictures on the gate.

“Lots of people used to come and feed her when they were little, and then bring their own children. Retired people used to come and talk to her and feed her biscuits, carrots and apples.

“A truck driver from Norfolk came twice a week for years and he would stop and bring her something to eat. This week a man in a sports car came to ask where she was. He said: ‘My wife has been feeding her for five years, She’ll be so upset.’ If people asked where I lived I’d just say the place with the donkey and they knew where I meant.

“I am quite pleased so many have been because they must have thought a lot about her and enjoyed seeing her. “She was part of the family so I would like to get another mother and foal.”
