Personal trainer Sally Salter has set herself a gigantic challenge.
Sally, 46, of Woodhall Drive, Healey, is limbering up to complete a 50 mile ultra-marathon around the Lake District in July.
She signed up for the challenge, which will see her compete against runners from across the globe including Europe and America.
Sally said: “I will have to battle through pain and the weather to complete the race so I am expecting a really gruelling test both mentally and physically.
“But I am up for the challenge. I did the London Marathon two years ago and despite me being no speed merchant, I really enjoyed it.”
Sally is no stranger to running having competed in several races across the district and is a member of Spen Running Club.
She said: “I have always done a lot of running and entered lot of smaller races on the weekend. I did the Dewsbury 10K, the London half marathon and the Abbey Dash.
“I was doing a race almost every weekend but because of my job, I was working a lot more over the weekends so decided to just do a couple of big ones a year.”
The Lakeland 50 is a 50-mile ultra-race with 3,100m of ascent through tricky terrain. It starts from the northern end of Ullswater before finishing in Coniston.
Competitors have 24 hours to finish the challenge.
To prepare for the race, Sally has created a gruelling training schedule which sees her run five nights a week.
She said: “The furthest I have ever run before was 26.2 miles. I have a big wall chart in my kitchen mapping out my runs for the next 13 weeks. I come home and cross them off one by one. It really keeps me going.”
Sally raised more than £4,000 for Great Ormond Street hospital children’s charity when she ran the London Marathon, and is open to supporting the charity again by running the Lakeland 50.
She said: “I did it for my close friend from school whose daughter died.
“The charity was really supportive of the family so I wanted to raise some money and could not believe how generous people were.
“I am aware it was two years ago but if people would like to support me and donate some money then it would definitely be for that charity.”
