Several arrests have been made since the attack as police investigate the possibility that the bomber – who was named as Manchester-born Salman Abedi – may not have acted alone.

The Islamic State terror group claimed responsibility for the barbaric attack involving a device packed with nuts and bolts which exploded in the foyer of the arena as thousands of young people were leaving the concert.

The bomb – which is believed to have exploded at about 10.30pm – was designed to cause maximum carnage, sending metal fragments flying through the arena’s foyer as the concert came to a close.

Prime Minister Theresa May denounced the “appalling sickening cowardice” of the suicide bomber and it was revealed that 12 of those rushed to hospital were children.
