PUPILS were devastated when they discovered vandals had damaged their new play area less than 24 hours after it was finished.

Children at Millbridge Junior and Infant School in Liversedge had been looking forward to playing on the new tyre area.

Work on the play area finished last Thursday afternoon and at 9.45pm the area was still secure.

But when the caretaker arrived early the next morning, tyres had been ripped up and stolen.

Headteacher Miss Fiona Wilson had to break the news to children at assembly on Friday morning.

The tyre park had cost £2,500 to create and had been designed by the winner of a school competition to draw up a play area.

A spokeswoman for the school said: “I would like to invite the people responsible to meet the pupils and staff to explain the reasons why they have done this.”

She said children were very shocked and upset when they discovered what had happened.

One said: “It made me feel upset because we’d only just got it. We’d not even had chance to play on it yet. I hope they are sorry for what they have done.”

Another added: “It’s sad that people don’t care about anything or anyone. It’s a lack of respect really.”

The school has recently had a fence put up in the hope of keeping vandals out.
