A new scheme aiming to boost market trade across Kirklees is to be launched next week.

Kirklees Council is offering would-be traders the chance to have a go at running their own market stall for free.

The move is timed to coincide with the Love Your Local Market campaign, which helps raise awareness of market trading and market shopping.

Coun Peter McBride, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This is an important national campaign, highlighting just how important the markets are to the lives of our residents.

“I encourage people who would like to try a free stall to get in touch with the markets team.

“All our local residents should try to visit their local market during this week when there is so much happening – and all of it free to take part.”

Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles MP announced plans for the scheme in the House of Commons last November.

It will run from May 15 to 29 and is targeting 500 markets throughout the country to get involved.

Kirklees is supporting the campaign by offering free stalls at Batley, Birstall,
Cleckheaton, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike and
Huddersfield to people wanting to test trade life as a
stallholder.

Free sessions will include advice and guidance to people thinking of starting their own businesses.

Sessions run as follows: Wednesday May 15 at Dewsbury Market from 11am to 1.30pm; Thursday May 16 at Huddersfield Open Market from 11am to 1.30pm; Monday May 20 at Queensgate Market, Huddersfield from 11am to 1.30pm and Tuesday May 21 at Heckmondwike Market from 1.30pm to 3pm.

Shoppers will also have the chance to meet a look-alike of one of the most famous market traders, Delboy Trotter.

He will be visiting Dewsbury Market on May 15 and Cleckheaton Market on May 18.

Shoppers can take part in the gameshow ‘Only Fools and Prizes’, meet Del and have their photos taken with him and the famous yellow van.

There will also be a entertainment and activities in the markets, including chocolate-making workshops,face-painting and balloon modelling.
