A CLECKHEATON school is ringing the changes to mark a new era.

The ancient bell tower at Whitechapel Primary School’s Moorend site, is being relocated to the school’s new home in Whitechapel Road. The primary school has been operating from two sites – Moorend and St Luke’s – over the last year, but comes together in September at Whitechapel Middle which closed last week.

Deputy headteacher Sandra Bolton said: “The bell tower will be on ground near the entrance of the new building and represent part of both the Moorend heritage and the new school’s history.”

The bell tower was part of the 1873 Moorend School building but was taken down when the west wall was partly rebuilt about 12 years ago. It was then re-built as a feature in the courtyard.

School governor the Rev Brunel James said: “We are delighted to be able to retain this historic structure as a reminder of the heritage we are building. We also hope to transfer the stone cross from the wall of the Moorend building to the new school.”
