A Spen lady is on a one-woman mission to get mature girls in the area having more fun!

Margaret Chamberlain is is the head of the Spen Ladies ’Aving Fun group, and she wants to recruit women over 50 to take part in fun day trips and events around Yorkshire.

Margaret moved back to her home town, Cleckheaton, after spending the last few years in Shrewsbury, where she became a member of the Shrewsbury Red Hatters.

The group’s name was based on the Jenny Joseph poem, Warning, which includes the line: “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, With a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.”

Margaret wants to continue this quirky tradition in Spen, and said: “We were a group of like-minded people who went around and took part in fun activities.

“When I moved back to Cleckheaton, I could not believe there were no groups like this in the area, so I felt like I had to set one up.

“I have had a good response to this so far – but we would ideally like to have more members.”

The group is holding a trip to the National Media Museum, Bradford, on Wednesday (March 27.

Margaret said: “We will be there in our red hats and purple dresses!”

The next meeting of the group will take place at Taste Cafe in Cleckheaton town centre on Monday April 8.
