THERE were emotional scenes at West End Middle school in Cleckheaton on Friday as it closed its doors for the final time.

The school site on South Parade, will become the new home for Heaton Avenue Primary School this September.

Despite the ending of an era, the school managed to give a fitting send-off for teachers and pupils alike with a special awards evening attended by children’s author Helena Pielichaty.

Helena was handing out the awards and trophies for high achievers in areas such as class endeavour and sports.

Musical numbers were then performed by the school’s choir, who sang Circle of Life from The Lion King musical, and the stars of the school’s production of Peter Pan, Laura Layden and Lewis Lockwood, who performed the song Why? from the concert.

Helena said: “I would like to thank the school once again for inviting me to the awards ceremony, it’s been a very moving occasion.”
