On Saturday November 8, local radio station Branch FM celebrated their seventh anniversary after obtaining a Community Radio License in 2007.

The station spent the morning broadcasting live in Dewsbury and provided an open invitation to the public with visits to the studios and refreshments.

Branch FM is a Christian radio station founded by members of Dewsbury Gospel Church. They have approximately 30 annual volunteers, aging from 15 to 65.

Barnabas Childs, 25, achieved a Media & Sports Journalism degree at Huddersfield University. He has been broadcasting a live daily breakfast show since 2011.

He said, “I believe that Branch FM gives those wanting to work within the media valuable experience and a unique opportunity in an ever-changing media world.

“We consider it a privilege when people come to us for help and training in this area.”

Around 100 people have received work experience at there in the last seven years.

Elements of the work include recording interviews, creating adverts, updating their social media and gaining experience of audio mixers.

Aimée Thomas began volunteering at the station and now co-hosts a show on Thursday evenings with her father.

“I really enjoy the editing process in radio, and love presenting live shows. My confidence in interviews has also definitely grown and I’ve learnt so much about the software involved.” She said,

“Branch FM has given me lots of experience that I will treasure as I leave school and progress into other things.”
