TRAFFIC in Cleckheaton Town Centre ground to a halt after a large tree fell across Bradford Road this morning (Monday) during strong winds.

Spen police were called to Bradford Road, opposite the Aakash restaurant, at around 9.30am after a large tree fell across the road, blocking traffic towards Chain Bar. Traffic heading towards the town centre were able to navigate around the obstacle.

Police set up a diversion within minutes to get traffic moving again, with cars, buses and lorries using Scott Lane.

Kirklees Council staff were called out to clear the tree and the debris.

The Highways Agency has warned motorists to carefully check weather forecasts before starting journeys this week, with further high winds expected.

The Met Office is warning that there is a strong chance of gusts of between 60mph and 70mph with speeds of up to 80mph possible in exposed areas.
