ARSONISTS torched four heavy goods lorries in Gomersal last night (Sunday) sending flames and plumes of smoke high into the sky - causing £40,000 of damage.
Fire crews were called to the Woodside Transport company, in Spen Lane, at around 10.30pm after several large explosions were heard by residents as far away as Hunsworth.
A thick plume of black smoke could be seen over Birkenshaw, as three crews battled to contain the blaze.
Several witnesses saw the lorries engulfed in flames, as smaller explosions continued until just after 11pm and
this dramatic video footage was shot by Cleckheaton man Peter Fawcett from the side of Spen Lane, where a crowd of onlookers watched the drama unfold.
The fire was brought under control by midnight, but police and forensic teams remain at the scene.
Spen Lane, St Peg Lane and Gomersal Lane were all closed off by police last night, but have reopened this morning.
Police are investigating the incident, which is being treated as arson.
A spokesman said: “At 10:36pm police received reports of explosions from the site off Spen Lane in Gomersal.
“On arrival, officers found that four curtain sider trailers had been set on fire. The reported explosions had been the sound of the tyres of the vehicles bursting.
“Police are keen to hear of any sightings of a silver Ford Fiesta and purple-coloured Ford Focus in the area in the hours before the fires were reported.”
