KIRKLEES Council has promised it is working to repair a wall knocked down in a car accident.

The boundary wall between Northgate, Heckmondwike, and Green Park, was damaged several weeks ago.

Jenny Holroyd, from Spen Valley Civic Society, said a lorry had smashed into the wall, leaving it broken and stones scattered in the park.

She said she believed the railings had been replaced after World War II, when iron railings were taken to use in the war effort.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said the authority was waiting for a specialist to give the timescale for repairs at Green Park.

He said: “Due to the age of the railings, it is very important to carry out a sympathetic restoration which is in keeping with the park.

“We are always mindful that any repairs need to maintain or improve the local surroundings. This will certainly be the case at Green Park and we are looking for work to get under way as soon as possible.”
