THE criticism of Kirklees Council Refuse Collection Service in Letterbox (“Bins service is so poor”) is unfair and to say that the service in Leeds is far superior is not borne out by facts.
Eighteen months ago the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition on Leeds City Council attempted to restructure the refuse collection service by changing the routes and introducing pay cuts for the drivers and collectors.
This was followed by 12 weeks of industrial action and was very costly for the people of Leeds. In the local elections that followed the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition was voted out of office.
Only now, after 18 months, due to the hard work of management and the trade unions, are the people of Leeds seeing significant improvements in their refuse collection service.
Thankfully, Kirklees Council never went down the Leeds route.
