Developer’s vision is admirable

Re the story ‘Flagship eco plan approved’, December 9, I supported the application from Howard Cook for the further development of the facilities at the Ponderosa.

However, I was puzzled by criticism over funding received from Kirklees Adult Services, currently through a contract with Adult Services; Ponderosa provides day care facilities for adults with learning and physical disabilities.

If these facilities were not provided at Ponderosa, Adult Services would have to spend an equivalent amount at an alternative venue. What was provided for my late brother at Ponderosa exceeded by far anything that he had previously received in other facilities funded by Social Services.

Howard Cook’s vision is admirably captured in a quotation from J F Kennedy: “All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have and equal opportunity to develop our talents.” I am convinced of the potential of this development, through its inclusion of facilities for those who may need care in retirement and links with other projects for the support of those with other social problems it will be a “flagship” for Kirklees.
