RESPONSES have been coming in following the publication of the Slater and Scholes family photographs in the November 27 edition of Looking Back.
One family desperate to get in touch with Kathleen Scholes, who submitted the pictures from her collection, is that of Steve Forsythe whose mother is Shirley Barstow. Shirley features in some of the photographs and recognises several of the children
in the pictures from her own childhood.

Shirley moved to Northern Ireland with her parents – her father Harry was one of the first Labour councillors in Cleckheaton – and didn't return to England until the 1960s. She now lives in Queensbury, near Wakefield, and is hoping to get in touch with her school friends, such as Alan and Kathleen Pinder who also feature in the photographs.

We were also contacted by Janet Egginton who said: "What a joy to see a photograph of Witchcraft in Toyland in the November 27 edition.

"I was visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Roberttown and couldn't believe my eyes.

"This was the first Sunday School concert after we had the use of the rooms, they had been occupied by troops during the war.

"We were trained by Phyllis Johnson and Winne Stockhill, perhaps Arnold Martin played the piano. On the front row extreme right is Pamela Ramsden, not Pauline, Pauline was in the next production Butterfly Queen.

"l am next to Pamela and my brother David who was Judy in the Punch and Judy show is on the back row extreme left. "There are many local families, three Broadbent sisters, three Watmough sisters, two Barden sisters, David and Janet Oxley, Alan and Kathleen Pinder, Keith and Jaqueline Layden, George and Sylvia and perhaps a young Winston Brown between Bobby Lee and Trevor Martin.

"So many lovely memories, I still remember the songs from the next production, I am hoping to see it in print in a future edition.

"My family left Liversedge in 1947, but I can recall all but four names on this photo. Sheila Parkin's father was the manager of Heckmondwike Co-op shoe department, they lived near the Station up Listing Lane. We used to play near the Station waiting for the Double-Header Steam train to come thundering down.

"A lovely trip down memory lane, manny thanks."

More of Kathleen Scholes' photographs will appear in this section over the coming weeks.
