BATLEY have signed two players as they prepare for a must-win game at bottom side Northowram Fields in the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division on Saturday (1.30pm).
All-rounder Wasim Nazir is expected to complete his transfer from Hopton Mills in time to to face Northowram, while Batley captain Tariq Hussain has also captured the services of all-rounder Amar Ashaq.
He has played at Rastrick, Wrenthorpe, Hanging Heaton and also had a short spell at Batley before taking a few years out of the game due to work commitments. Ashaq will be in the side on Saturday as Amin Laher is unavailable.
One player set to leave Batley is Arshad Ali, who scored 350 league runs last season. He has asked for a transfer this week but the club are unsure where he is going.
Batley's 4-1 defeat against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers last week saw them drop into the bottom two for the first time this season, but Hussain was pleased with the effort shown when his side reached 228-7 in reply to 265.
"We played much more positively against Parish and if we can do the same at Northowram we can come away with six points," said Hussain.
The big cup-ties keep coming for Birstall and they face Mirfield Parish Cavaliers in the Jack Hampshire Memorial Trophy quarter-finals Sunday (1.30pm).
It is the tie of the round with the sides separated by just one place and two points in the league.
Parish's overseas man Eric Austin is a former Leeds Road favourite and was part of Birstall chairman Mark Gilman's victorious team at a Round Table Golf Day at Howley Hall on Tuesday. Richard Sidle and Dave Fozard made up the four-man team.
Birstall face a tough game in the Premier Division on Saturday when third-placed Wakefield St Michael's are the visitors.
Staincliffe are second in Division Two after losing to Thornhill last week. They are now level on 34 points with East Leeds, who they visit tomorrow.
Batley A face a difficult game when they host Buttershaw St Paul's, while bottom side Woodkirk host Wakefield Thornes. Woodkirk are also in action on Sunday when they visit East Ardsley in the Barry Winstanley Cup.
n Inconsistent Hanging Heaton got back to winning ways with victories over Yeadon (league) and Undercliffe (HW Cup) last weekend and have climbed to sixth place in Bradford League Division One.
They travel to Baildon tomorrow and will be hoping the Jenny Lane side's slump will continue.
Baildon were top of the league when they lost to Birstall in the HW Cup on May 18, since when they have won only once in the league and bowed out of the Priestley Cup. They have slipped to eighth place, although they are just three points behind Heaton.
