HOWDEN Clough's Matthew Smith and Chris Butler of Cleckheaton have been selected to represent Great Britain Under-18s at in-line puck hockey at the Junior Olympics in America later this year
Matthew, 16, and 17-year-old Chris both play for Snaith Stormers near Selby.
Chris started playing the sport four years ago when a trip to the Bradford Ice Rink with friends led to him talking to some ice hockey players and he decided to give the in-line skating version a try.
He liked it so much, he bought the full kit and began playing with the former Dewsbury Dragons team, based at Dewsbury Sports Centre, and that is where he met Matthew.
Snaith have only lost one game in the British In-line Puck Hockey Association League this season and were crowned North East Champions last week.
Matthew had been playing in-line hockey for six years and joined Snaith a year before Chris did.
Both were invited for a series of trials before they were selected for the Great Britain squad, who fly out to Detroit for the Junior Olympics on July 31.
Matthew and Chris are currently trying to raise the £1,800 they will each need to fund the trip.
Chris's father Steve is organising a raffle and a fund-raising event, while he has also written to various businesses about sponsorship or donating a raffle prize.
Any businesses who would be willing to help out, or any pub or club in the area who could stage a fund-raising night, can contact Chris on (01274) 864776.
