Gomersal athlete Scott Atkinson struck 800 metre gold at the Men’s Under-20 Scottish Indoor Championships in Glasgow last weekend.
The New College student, who races for Wakefield Harriers under coach Chris Bedford, produced a stunning final lap, which saw him overcome a 15 metre gap as he timed his finish to perfection and overcame the leader on the line.
The trip north was a test of Atkinson’s fitness levels and the 800m race was his fourth event of the day.
He also competed in the 400m but a mix up in the seedings meant he left himself too much to do to set up a 400 and 800 metre double.
The 800m gold was a worthwhile scalp with most of the field having set personal best times at least three seconds quicker than Atkinson.
However, other athletes hadn’t taken into account his blistering pace over the last 200m as Atkinson smashed his own pb on the way to victory, which now stands at one min 56 secs.
