Liversedge suffer extra time defeat as they exit League Cup

Liversedge suffered an extra-time defeat as they bowed out of the Northern Counties East League Cup at the hands of Clipstone on Tuesday.

It was the second time in four days the sides had met and Clipstone avenged last Saturday’s 1-0 Premier Division defeat as they fought back from two goals down to force extra time before going on to progress 4-2.

Liversedge made the perfect start to Tuesday’s cup tie and were ahead inside 30 seconds through a Danny Hull goal.

Leading scorer Vaughan Redford doubled his side’s advantage with his 17th goal of the season in all competitions and Liversedge looked well on course to reach the fourth round as they led 2-0 at half-time.

Jack Siddall pulled a goal back for the visitors after 49 minutes and Clipstone ensured the tie went to extra time thanks to George Milner’s 80th minute goal.

Clipstone proved the stronger side in extra time as Michael Trench put them ahead with a 105th minute goal.

Clipstone’s leading scorer Joshua Nodder ensured it was a happy journey back to Nottinghamshire for the Cobras when he bagged a fourth goal in the final minute of extra time to complete his side’s win.

Livesredge had ended a three-match losing run last Saturday when they edged out Clipstone 1-0.

Steven Wales scored the only goal of the game after 32 minutes as Liversedge secured an 11th win of the season.

That was enough to see them move back into second place in the NCE League Premier Division but they slipped to third on Tuesday after Thackley’s 2-1 win over Handsworth Parramore.

Sedge trail leaders Cleethorpes Town by two points ahead of Saturday’s trip to Grimsby.
