Bierley bid to hold lead – Liversedge in showdown
EAST BIERLEY, new leaders of the ever-intriguing Bradford League Division One, will have to work extra hard to win their derby match against Gomersal on Sunday, as they are without a game on Saturday when everyone else has a double weekend of fixtures.
Bierley took over at the top last Saturday with a terrific win over Bradford and Bingley as Andrew Rennison (133) and Lee Goddard (107no) starred.
They are three points ahead of Pudsey St Lawrence who face Yeadon at home and Woodlands away this weekend. Also on 288 points are Pudsey Congs who travel to Saltaire and entertain Baildon.
Woodlands have slipped to fifth after they were unpicked by Cleckheaton last weekend when Mark Cummins claimed an impressive 5-20 to send the Oakenshaw side to a 103-run victory.
It helped Cleckheaton to climb to sixth on 277 points three behind Woodlands. This weekend Woodlands entertain Bradford and Bingley on Saturday before they visit St Lawrence.
Cleckheaton will be hoping to make the most of their matches at home to seventh-placed Undercliffe before going to Farsley.
Gomersal, who overcame Undercliffe last Saturday with Richard Gould making 81, will be hoping for another big win against bottom club Bankfoot tomorrow before taking on the leaders. The team's earlier meeting was abandoned for rain so there is plenty at stake.
For Cleckheaton the double weekend sees them entertain Undercliffe and they are at Farsley on Sunday.
In Division Two, Hartshead Moor play their final match of the season tomorrow.
Moor, who have slipped to sixth place, will be aiming to pick up points at second-bottom Idle in the hope of overhauling Keighley, who are a point above Moor.
No matter what the celebrations will continue at Highmoor Lane as Moor's second team are due to receive their trophy for winning Second Teams Division Two.
Spen Victoria are a place and nine points behind Moor in Division Two with two matches to play. Tomorrow they visit Windhill who are just below Spen, and complete their programme next Saturday at home to Keighley.
In the Central Yorkshire League teams are playing their penultimate matches. The Premier Division sees a fascinating basement showdown as bottom-club Liversedge (26pts) host second- bottom club Ossett (33pts).
It's a must-win contest for Liversedge. To survive they must stay in touch with third-bottom Batley (34pts) who face a tough test at fifth-placed Townville tomorrow. Liversedge are seeking only their second win of the season but they put up a good show last week scoring 215 in reply to New Farnley's 230. Shoaib Khan's 85 and David Bolt's 64 will have boosted confidence.
In Division One Scholes overcame newly promoted Mirfield Parish last Saturday to push themselves up to fourth bottom on 41 points but they will need to beat seventh placed East Ardsley at New Popplewell Lane tomorrow to enable them to breathe a little easier. If they were to lose tomorrow they could still be drawn into the relegation mire and everything would go to the wire next week.
