O’Regan again caught the eye, earning praise from several Great Britain squad coaches in attendance and many in the arena thought the Heckmondwike man had done enough to win but it was French, who was awarded the contest on a split decision.

Flyweight Khan, who is also a student at Bradford College, and boxes out of the KBW Gym in Dewsbury progressed to Sunday’s final with unanimous victories over Ryan Briscoe in the quarter-finals and Great Britain boxer Niall Farrell in the semis.

Khan went on to meet Oldham’s unseeded boxer William Cawley in the 52kg final when he was edged out.
