Briggs takes charge after Wyke ARL coach resigns by e-mail

WYKE amateur RL club have appointed Nigel Briggs as their new coach following the shock departure of Kevin Fellows, who had been in the job for only five weeks.

The Pennine League club, who run two open age teams, were shocked when Fellows sent a message to say he had resigned. He is now reported to have taken over as head coach to Conference club Shaw Cross Sharks.

Wyke chairman Jason Whomack said: "Kevin took training on Tuesday of last week and we had a chat about a few things but he said nothing about leaving. I got to work on Thursday morning to find an e-mail from him saying he had resigned.

"However, we contacted Nigel Briggs to see if he was interested and he has stepped in, this could be a good thing out of a bad, we were very thankful to appoint him. I had a good talk with him and we both seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet. I am more than happy we have Nigel on board.

"He met the players on Tuesday and they were happy with him and he has brought Ian Crossland with him as his assistant.

Briggs spent almost all his playing career with the Brighouse club. He coached at Huddersfield side St Josephs and two years ago took charge of the Brighouse Under-18s. Last season he was assistant to Brendan Hill with the open age side. Crossland too comes from Brighouse.

Wyke have been encouraged by the turn-out at training so far at a time when players are often on holiday and working shifts.

They have as many as 40 players available and there are regularly around 25 players at the Tuesday and Thursday training sessions.

The league set-up has yet to be finalised following acceptance by the Pennine of a number of clubs which have transferred from the Yorkshire League but Wyke expect to have their first team playing in Division Two when the season starts again in September.
