Gary Sykes invites boxing fans to watch him train at Batley gym

GARY Sykes is inviting fans to watch him prepare for his British super featherweight title defence at his final training session at Dicky's Gym in Batley on Monday night.

The Dewsbury Moor boxer takes on Belfast's Kevin O'Hara at Huddersfield Sports Centre next Friday (May 28) and supporters are welcome to watch him go through his final preparations at the gym, which is just off Hick Lane, between 6.30 to 7.30pm next Monday.

It is a great chance for families to watch the Dewsbury star up close and after the training session, Sykes will pose for photos with fans.

Tickets for the title showdown will also be available to buy on Monday at 30, or 65 for ringside seats.

Sykes's preparations are also going well, with tough sparring sessions and he is confident of retaining the Lonsdale belt next Friday.

Former world champion Barry McGuigan has been helping O'Hara train for the fight and he is predicting a tough night's work for 26-year-old Sykes next Friday, saying: "It will be a tough fight, but if Kevin performs on the night, he could get the job done, and it would be great to have another British champion from Belfast."

O'Hara has won 17 and lost five of his 22 fights so far but he pushed Commonwealth title holder Ricky Burns close before losing on points last year.

Burns defeated another Dewsbury fighter, Youssef Al Hamidi, on points on the undercard to Kevin Mitchell's world interim title clash with Michael Katsidis last Saturday, although the Scot was far from convincing.

If Sykes can overcome O'Hara in his first title defence next week it could open the door to bigger nights in his career.

There is already talk of Sykes meeting Burns, while another potential opponent would be Carl Johanneson of Leeds in a fight that would be sure to attract a big local crowd.

Tickets for next Friday's clash are still on sale by contacting Mark Waters on 07890 071883.
