Liversedge slip down table after derby defeat

Liversedge 0

Brighouse Town 4

LIVERSEDGE crashed to defeat in a feisty Northern Counties East League Premier Division derby at Clayborn last Saturday.

Liversedge had their chances early on as Andy Howland broke clear and forced a good save out of Tom Taylor in the Town goal.

Striker Matthew Bugg unleashed a dipping 25-yard effort that clipped the top of the crossbar and went over.

Chris Hirst saw a shot blocked by a defender and Darryl Leach’s header also hit the crossbar before Brighouse had a spell of pressure.

Liversedge were made to pay for not taking advantage of their chances when Ryan Hall slipped a pass to Danny Naidole and he cut in from the left before unleashing a brilliant 25-yard strike into the top corner after 37 minutes.

Less than a minute later Brighouse doubled their lead as Sedge goalkeeper Paul Hargreen parried a shot from Naidole but Ernest Boafa was on hand to drill home the rebound.

Liversedge knew they had to score first after the break to have any hope of getting something from the game but it was Brighouse who stretched their advantage as Hargreen denied Boafa with another good save but Hall tapped home the rebound and at 3-0 it effectively sealed the three points.

The game was marred by a 70th minute incident when Sedge striker Danny Toronczak and Town’s Sam Hewitt tangled when challenging for a ball close to halfway and a scuffle broke out which resulted in both players being sent off.

Brighouse added a fourth goal when more good work from the impressive Boafa saw him set up James Hurtley to score against his former club.

Victory keeps Town second in the table just a point behind leaders Bridlington, while Liversedge have slipped to 14th ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Retford United.
