Liversedge aim to build on improved display

LIVERSEDGE will be aiming to build on an improved performance in the FA Cup extra preliminary round, when they return to Northern Counties East League Premier Division action at home to Pickering tomorrow (Saturday) kick-off 3pm).

The contest is already a basement battle with both sides having lost their opening league contests.

New Liversedge manager Stuart Waddington said the next batch of league matches against the likes of Pickering, Dinnington and Arnold will be the best barometer of his side's improvement so there is plenty at stake as the players find their feet in the system and try to impress the new management team

"We were a couple of weeks behind the other teams in their preparation and we will find out more when we play the likes of Pickering, Dinnington and Arnold in the next few weeks," explained Waddington.

There was plenty to build on and much more positive attitudes to emerge from the 3-0 defeat against Whitley Bay.

The visitors, three time FA Vase winners in the last eight years, had clearly underestimated Liversedge in the first half.

The home side was sound in defence, with John Penn directing well and solid in midfield with James Flower and Damien Dunne trying to get the team going forward with good crosses into Brighton Mugadze up front.

Whitley Bay was forced to change tack and took the lead early in the second half. Liversedge pressed again but could not convert their chances. The result flattered to deceive as six minutes from time the visitors converted a disputed penalty and in injury time the Bay made it 3-0.

The battling spirit will have pleased the manager and he will be even more delighted if they can start to turn it into victories to really get the campaign going.
