Liversedge plan for next season

EXPECT more next season is a promise being made by Liversedge manager Sean Regan.

Regan's side signed off the 2009-2010 season with a 3-0 win in their final league match at Lincoln Moorlands Railway, last Saturday.

Liversedge finished the Northern Counties East League Premier Division season in ninth-place, having secured 17 wins. They also reached the semi-final of the West Riding County Cup, claiming some big scalps on the way including a memorable win over UniBond side Ossett Albion.

"If you look at the bigger picture, at the start of the season people thought we would have been the team to struggle. We were a new team from day one and we have been really tested on the way but it has been really promising this season.

"We have made progress from last year as the points and position has shown," said Regan.

He was pleased to field a strong side for the final match after only fielding 11 men in the previous two games.

"We had to include five Under-19s at Pickering Town so they got their chance but it was good to finish strongly, especially as the Under-19s goalkeeper Mitchell Smith did well in goal and saved a penalty at Lincoln.

In any team consistency is key and Regan is aiming to get that for next season.

"I plan to sit down with the committee in the next few weeks and plan for next season. Ideally we would like to have a reserve team next season playing in a decent league.

"If you have a squad of 18 players some are not going to be happy and will go elsewhere to play football. If they are playing to a decent standard they will stay and battle for a first team place."

Regan is happy with the Under-19 set up taken this year by Colin Sherman and most recently by Joe Hewitt,

"Joe is doing a great job with the Under-19s which will be another good foundation for next season."

As a new manager Regan said he was prepared for a busy season and got one.

"Looking at every scenario this season, bad and good, it has definitely been worthwhile, we will be looking to progress by building on strong foundations and we will be better again next season."

Regan says he has players in mind for next season and he will be inviting them to pre-season.

"We will have a core group of players for pre-season, last year we had about 80 which made it quite difficult to keep up to."

In their Centenary Season Liversedge are planning a celebration of football on July 25. They are planning an event for the whole family including a football tournament in the morning, stalls and games around the pitch throughout and the highlight will be a legends match in the afternoon.
