Liversedge seek to break NCEL Premier duck

LIVERSEDGE will be hoping to find their scoring touch as they aim to get off the mark in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division with two home games over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Liversedge have created a glut of chances in their last two games but they have been unable to capitalise and defensive lapses have then proved costly.

Manager Stuart Waddington is in an upbeat mood ahead of games against Dinnington Town and Arnold Town, although he realises his side must start taking their chances if they are to climb the table.

"We were the better side against Whitley Bay (in the FA Cup) and could have been three or four goals up.

"The were in buoyant mood ahead of the Pickering game we were buzzing.

"We created 10 very good chances and could have been four goals up but when we were leading 2-1, we fell asleep and sloppy defending allowed Pickering to get back in the game.

"It is a big plus that we are creating chances and I would be worried if we weren't but we can't afford to let these chances go begging."

Liversedge welcome Dinnington to Clayborn tomorrow and then host Arnold on Monday, with both sides having a win and a defeat from their opening two matches, so it gives Waddington's men a good chance to pick up some winning points.

Brook Newton made a welcome return last week, following a broken ankle, and he is again set to feature tomorrow, while James Hurtley and Gareth Saville could both be given starts as James Flower and striker Jamie Wasley are unavailable.

Waddington's day job is a sports development officer in the Spen Valley and he has persuaded several promising young players to join the club's Under-19s, who defeated Yorkshire Old Boys League side Ealandians 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Jon Jo Keogh scored with two great strikes, while Jack Rogerson headed home after a fine passing move.

"I know seven or eight of these lads and they have had a good grounding. Some have been at professional clubs and other have come through our community programmes and one or two could get a surprise appearance off the bench later this season," Waddington added.

Liversedge, who had eight players under-16 years old on Wednesday, play their final pre-season game at home to Skipton College next Wednesday (kick off 7pm), while their first league game is away to Ossett Town on Thursday September 9 (7.45pm).
