Priestley Cup Final ambition sparks Spen duo

By Andrew Hunt CLECKHEATON and Woodlands will be aiming to reach the Priestley Cup final on Sunday but both local sides face tricky away ties (start 1pm).

John Wood takes his Cleckheaton side to Bradford and Bingley hoping they can re-produce the kind of form that saw them defeat Pudsey Congs last Saturday, while Woodlands travel to last season's beaten finalists Farsley.

The Moorenders are seventh in Bradford League Division One, 30 points adrift of leaders Undercliffe, and while that is not an impossible margin to make up the inconsistent Cleckheaton side will see the Priestley Cup as their best chance of silverware this time.

Cleckheaton warm up for their semi-final by making the the short trip to Gomersal, who are in need of points as they aim to pull further away from the bottom three.

Woodlands entertain rivals East Bierley tomorrow with both aiming to put pressure on the leading sides.

Just 20 points separate Undercliffe from sixth- placed Woodlands, who are still firing on two fronts and will be aiming to make the Priestley final on all local affair with Spen Victoria set to stage the showpiece game on August 29.

Hartshead Moor face a crucial game in their quest for promotion from Division Two when they travel to rivals Bowling Old Lane tomorrow.

Moor are third but are 24 points behind second- placed Lightcliffe, who inflicted a first home league defeat on leaders Hanging Heaton.

With Old Lane fourth, just two points behind there is a cracking game in prospect and the duo will also take be taking a keen interest in the game at Spen Lane, where Heavy Woollen Cup semi-finalists Hanging Heaton take on Spen Victoria.

Liversedge became the latest side to try to stop the Wrenthorpe juggernaut when the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division leaders visit Roberttown Lane.

Liversedge are desperate to get something from the game as they are second-bottom, two points behind Batley.

They will take heart from the fact that fellow strugglers Birstall had Wrenthorpe reeling at 103-9 before a vital last wicket stand steered them to 152 all out and they edged to a 10-run win.

Wrenthorpe are aiming to win the treble as they meet Shepley in the Heavy Woollen semi-finals on Sunday and are also through to the last four of the Jack Hampshire Trophy.

Scholes have moved 10 points clear of the Division One relegation zone thanks to a terrific victory over promotion-chasing Carlton last week.

They will be aiming to put further daylight between themselves and the bottom two when they travel to meet Methley A, tomorrow.
