Scholes face league and cup tests as Woodlands hit top spot

SCHOLES face a challenging weekend in the Central Yorkshire League.

The first team take on Division One leaders Hunslet Nelson tomorrow at Gipsy Lane, while on Sunday the focus turns to the second team who are involved in a Crowther Cup quarter-final at Yeadon A.

The New Popplewell Lane side will be hoping to become the first team this season to inflict a defeat on Nelson. Like all other teams last weekend's fixtures were washed out by the rain. So both sides should be raring to go.

Scholes haven't won since the third week of the season but they will be hoping they can pose a threat to the leaders with young bowlers like Daniel Hope and Christian Jackson to the fore, supported by all-rounder Majid Majeed.

Scholes' second team have impressed on their way to the quarter-finals having beaten Kirkheaton by two runs in the first round and cruising past Mirfield Parish in the second round. The experience of all-rounder Andy Spence will be crucial for Scholes on Sunday.

In the Premier Division Liversedge will also be put to the test as they travel to Methley tomorrow.

The Roberttown Laners are still seeking their first win. There will be no lack of effort to make it happen tomorrow at Methley.

Woodlands took over at the top of the Bradford League Division One table following a hard-fought 23 run win over Farsley on Bank Holiday Monday but their tenure at the top could be short-lived.

The Oakenshaw side are not in action tomorrow, because of an uneven number of teams in Division One, so second-placed Undercliffe and Pudsey St Lawrence are poised to overtake them if they can take points off Farsley and Bankfoot respectively.

Cleckheaton will be aiming to continue the momentum they created on Monday when they overcame East Bierley, at South View Road when they travel to champions Baildon tomorrow.

Seventh-placed Cleckheaton were given a boost by a 3-13 haul by all-rounder Mark Cummins, while John Wood continues to lead the side from the front taking two wickets and contributing an unbeaten half-century on Monday.

They are also giving youngsters Edward and Marcus Walmsley a good run in the first team and they are doing well after a season getting experience at Bankfoot.

East Bierley will try to bounce back from their defeat when they travel to Saltaire who are third-bottom of the table.

Gomersal are also hoping to have set a train of success in motion after they defeated Baildon on Monday when they travel to Bradford and Bingley tomorrow.

After their second win of the season Gomersal moved up to 10th place and are just 10 points behind Bradford and Bingley who are in sixth place. Gomersal's persistence was a key factor in Monday's win.

Gomersal overcame a poor start to bowl Baildon out. It was thanks largely to a team effort led by five- wicket hero Ben Platt and Shahzaib Khan who took three wickets.

The Gomersal batsmen were also resilient they never let a setback get them down and kept on coming back to eventually ease to victory. All those qualities will be needed if they are to earn anything from their trip to Wagon Lane.

Hartshead Moor surrendered second spot in Division Two to Lightcliffe, the team who beat them on Monday, so Moor will be keen to get back on track tomorrow. To do that they will have to find a way to beat league leaders Hanging Heaton.

Moor, led by Simon North, have surprised many by their early charge. But in winning five matches out of seven they have shown they are a solid all round side and a match for all in the league.

Spen Victoria will be seeking to continue the form they showed when they defeated Morley on Monday when they meet bottom-club Idle at Spen Lane tomorrow.

Adam Brown held court with the bat making a spectacular century including eight sixes and eight fours and he will be hoping to help Spen make progress up the table.
