LIVERSEDGE will aim to end the year on a high when they travel to Staveley Miners Welfare in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division tomorrow (kick off 3pm).

Eric Gilchrist, pictured, and his side have had an unfortunate time over Christmas. Saturday’s game at home to Staveley was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, while they pushed neighbours Brighouse Town close on Boxing Day’s before two late goals saw them slip to defeat.

Sedge adapted better to the poor conditions, which saw heavy rain falling throughout and they went close through Darryl Leach from a free-kick.

Sedge’s best chance came when good work by Gibril Bojang set up Matthew Bugg but his shot clipped the outside of a post.

Brighouse were awarded a penalty just before half-time but goalkeeper Ryan Blythe produced a terrific save to deny Tom Matthews from the spot. Blythe was in inspired form and continued to thwart the home side with a string of impressive saves.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 69th minute when Town were awarded a second penalty for a foul on Matthews.

Captain Leach was sent off for disputing the decision and this time Matthews made no mistake with the spot kick.

Ten-man Sedge showed real heart and pressed for an equaliser but were caught on the break and Ernest Boafo scored to seal victory but they have a chance to bounce back at Staveley.
