Thornhill and Celtic march on – Hopton in semi-finals
THORNHILL and Battyeford Airedale Celtic will meet in an all Wakefield League Wheatley Cup quarter-final next month after both cruised through last Saturday's delayed third round ties.
Thornhill, who are chasing five trophies this season, gained a 5-1 success at unbeaten Spen Valley League Premier Division Jardy's.
Scott Hargreaves and Jamie Ingham hit two each for Thornhill, who also had Nathan Kemp on target. Lee Speight scored the consolation for Jardy's.
Battyeford Airedale Celtic dumped out West Riding County Amateur League Division One hosts Overthorpe SC with a 6-2 victory.
Scott Minto and Jamie Beaver scored for Overthorpe but Dale Smith led Battyeford to victory with a hat-trick, while Jason Milner, Richard Newman and Wayne Flannery also struck.
Thornhill and Battyeford warm up for their Wheatley quarter-final on March 20 when they meet in this Saturday's Wakefield League Premier Division Cup quarter-final.
There was a thrilling Wheatley clash at Princess Mary Playing Fields, where Ossett Common Rovers required extra-time before seeing off plucky Hartshead 5-4.
Rovers appeared to be cruising into the last eight as they led 3-0 with 20 minutes to go.
However, Hartshead battled back in style and goals from Jordan Fox, Matthew Biddle and Dean Rayne sent the tie into extra-time.
Rovers regained the lead 30 seconds after the re-start but although Brad Walton levelled at 4-4, the visitors struck a fifth and managed to hold on.
Rovers now have a home quarter-final against Hunsworth, who edged out fellow WR County Amateur Division One side Heckmondwike Town 2-1 with goals from Lee Brook and Dale Wright. Rob Hiscox struck Town's reply.
Lower Hopton are the first side through to the semi-finals after passing a stern test at Wheelwright of the Yorkshire Old Boys League.
Craig Fryer and Dean Gannon struck for the home side but goals from Paul Ashwell (two) and Richard Briggs ensured Hopton progressed 3-2.
Remaining Wheatley Cup quarter-final ties (Sat March 20): Heckmondwike GS v Gildersome Spurs, Ossett CR v Hunsworth, Thornhill v Battyeford Airedale Celtic.
n None of last weekend's Brook Butler Cup quarter-final ties went ahead so they will now be played on Sunday March 21.
As heavy snow prevented any matches going ahead in Kirklees last Sunday, the Huddersfield Junior League have decided to move last week's programme to this Sunday.
The Blackburn and Secker Cup ties, postponed last week, will be go ahead this Sunday.
Ossett Town host Battyeford in a HW Under-16 Blackburn Cup quarter-final, while there is a semi-final between Ossett Albion and Woodkirk Valley.
The HW Under-14 Secker Cup semi-finals – Battyeford v Ossett Town and Churwell Lions v Hartshead A – will also take place.
