Twin success follows Piper boys
By Trevor Watson IT was a twin success at the Cleckheaton RU club's Player of the Year awards night at Moorend last Friday.
Back row man Richard Piper was named the Players' Player of the Year, while his twin brother Matt, who played most of the season at centre, won the most improved player.
Coach Dave Harrison said: "The right people won the right awards and both have had very good seasons.
"Richard has been Mr Consistency and has been there every week and has won most of the player of the match awards.
"There were doubts as to whether Matt would be centre or scrum-half and he might have feared for his place when Pete Murphy joined us. But he has sat very well at centre alongside a player of Pete's quality and his tackling has always been outstanding for a young player."
The Clubman of the Year award was won by Nigel Earnshaw, who has been an important backroom figure at Moorend for more than 20 years.
He has been heavily involved with maintenance around the ground and in the dressing rooms and in recent years Nigel has also organised the club's annual dinner. All work which is appreciated by the committee.
Harrison said the players would return for pre-season training on July 1 and he is already speaking to some players regarding joining Cleckheaton.
He added: "We would like to bring in two or three players but not too many. Injuries prevented us having a settled side for most of last season but we should be capable of doing well at the lower level.
"I would like to sign an old head in the forwards, perhaps a second row or number eight. Someone who can keep the other forwards on their toes when the going gets tough.
"We have a good spirit here and want to maintain that. They are a cracking set of lads to work with and I told them that towards the end of the season."
