Walsh claims bronze as Spen AC impress

JENNY Walsh of Spenborough Athletic Club ran a superb race in her first major event of the season, the Northern Cross Country Championships in Blackburn, last Saturday.

Walsh took on a tough field of athletes in the first race of the day and was the only Spenborough runner in the Under-17 Women's 5K.

She set off with the leading group which dwindled as they reached a long, steady climb. When they descended the group was down to three and Jenny was well clear of fourth place and closing down on second as they crossed the finish line, giving her a well deserved bronze medal.

In the Under-17 Men's 6k race Simon Bolland was the only athlete for Spenborough and ran a gutsy race, finishing in 85th place

The Under-13 Girls 3K was next and Spen were led home by Abby Parkinson, who ran really well, finishing seventh. Elle Bolton-Hardy was 95th and Keavey Ward 109th out of 211 runners.

In the Under-15 Boys 4k race, Liam Stedman continued his good form, coming home first for Spenborough in 12th place overall. The improving Paul Davis, with his strong finish, came 30th and both have another year in this age group. Christopher Hampson was 120th out of 203 runners.

In the Under-15 Girls 4K race Bethany Ellis ran a strong race finishing in a creditable 12th place.

Katie Byrne was next home in 68th, both have another year in this age group, and Mollie Flannery was in 114th.

The Under-13 Boys 3K had two representatives.

James Anthoney, who is improving with every race, was first home in 87th followed by team mate Glen Aspindall, who also has another year in this age group, in 142nd.

Amy Sharrad was the only Senior Lady in the 8k race but didn't let that deter her she got off quick then settled in for the three laps finishing in 53rd place out of 222 runners.

Three Senior Men braved the cold and fog to run the 11.5k four lap race. Jeff Hornby led Spen home in 286th followed by Gerrard Skippings 357th and Frank Reddington 399th out of 602 runners.
