Former Dewsbury Moor player George Burgess was named International Rookie of the year at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester on Wednesday night.

Dewsbury-born Huddersfield Giants half-back Danny Brough was shortlisted for rugby league’s most prestigious individual honour - Rugby League International Federation Player of the Year - but Super League’s man of steel was pipped by New Zealand super star Sonny Bill Williams.

Three Dewsbury-born players were included in the international team of the year as prop Sam Burgess was selected alongside brother George and Brough among the best 13 players in international rugby.

Dewsbury will receive more accolades at Saturday’s World Cup final as the Old Trafford showdown between Australia and New Zealand will be refereed by local lad Richard Silverwood, with fellow Dewsbury and Batley Society official James Child a touch judge.
