Young tumblers from around the country travelled to Thornes Park Athletic Stadium last weekend to take part in Wakefield Gym Club’s annual competition.
Teams from as far as Glasgow, Newcastle and Southampton made their way to Wakefield as the host gymnasts gave a great home performance.
Following on from their recent successes, the Wakefield tumblers picked up two gold and two silver medals, playing their part in an excellent two days of competition.
A total of twenty teams were in attendance for the contest, and more than 200 of the country’s best young tumblers turned up to battle it out for medals against a strong Wakefield contingent.
The annual event is one of the highlight on the tumbling calendar, and certainly lived up to the hype with a high standard of tumbling on show throughout.
The ever-growing reputation of Wakefield’s junior team was boosted by impressive gold medals for Eleanor Simpson and Amy Jackson in the 13-14 women’s category.
Simpson belied her young age with some excellent power tumbling, while Jackson will now have her eyes set on claiming a medal at the British Championships.
In the 17-18 men’s competition, Matthew Weightman showed how much he has progressed in the last year with a brilliant silver.
Weightman was up against a number of strong competitors in a tough contest, but showed his class to finish in an excellent second place.
Wakefield’s final medal of the event came in the 15-16 men’s category, where Joseph Vessey continued his good form by taking silver.
Vessey, who is among the best in the country for his age group, put in a classy performance to deservedly get his hands on the medal.
There were also some excellent displays among the younger Wakefield competitors, who did not seem overawed by the occasion.
Bry Bradshaw and Aaron Heaton both showed huge improvements in their tumbling in the 11-12 men’s contest, while in the 11-12 women’s competition, debutants Ellie Pearson, Maya Robertson and Laura Mason all acquitted themselves well.
Next up for the club is a trip to Basingstoke at the end of the month, where they will hope to add to an already medal-laden season.
