Heckmondwike boxer Cory O’Regan landed a gold medal at the Great Britain Elite Three Nations tournament in Dunfermline, Scotland, last weekend.

The 20-year-old defeated two Scottish opponents over Friday and Saturday as he became one of seven English boxers to strike gold.

The Bradford College student could now earn a place on GB Elite’s podium potential squad and faces a trial in mid-June.

O’Regan’s performances in Scotland were also enough to earn high praise from England team manager Martin Webb.

As host nation Scotland were allowed to enter two boxers in each weight division and O’Regan came up against home fighter Josh Sandford in Friday’s 60kg lightweight semi-final.

The southpaw gave a master-class in how to hit without getting hit with a superb repertoire of counter punches to earn a unanimous points decision and a place in Saturday’s final.

O’Regan faced Calvin McCord and gave another excellent display of counter-punching reflected in his comprehensive winning scores of 30-27 (twice) and 30-25.

England secured an impressive seven gold medals, five silver and four bronze at the tournament and O’Regan now has his sights set on earning a place on the GB squad.

O’Regan had already caught the eye of Great Britain scouts with impressive performances at the English National Championships.

He reached the final of the national championships at the Echo Arena in Liverpool last month and finished runner up.

O’Regan, who is sponsored by Qualtech of Dewsbury and Westgate 23, Heckmondwike, has had an outstanding few months as he also became the first Yorkshire boxer to land a new English Senior Elite belt in December and successfully defended it in February.

Bradford College sports student, Ismail Khan, who boxes out of the KBW gym in Dewsbury, has also received an invitation to attend an assessment camp with the GB squad after he impressed at National Championships.
