Amateur rugby league is set to return to Mirfield after a new club was formed in the town this week.
The Mirfield Stags are aiming to plug a gap for rugby league in the area and have already entered a side into a summer league, starting in March.
Stags general manager Ryan Sparks is plotting a bright future for the club and has spoken of his excitement following its launch.
Sparks said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce that the great game of rugby league is returning to Mirfield.
“A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes over the past couple of months and I am delighted to say I am now in a position to officially get the club off the ground.
“There is a five-year plan in place and I hope the Stags can help shape the future of the town through sport.
“The idea is to create a long-lasting legacy here, with the eventual development of a fresh new hub for the whole community to enjoy and be proud of.
“There can be no better time to launch such an exciting venture given the fact the sport is entering a whole new era at professional level.
“Next season looks set to be an incredible one and this club deserves to be a part of it.”
The club will operate in the summer season, with training due to start in January, prior to the big kick-off in March.
The Stags will operate a solitary open-age side but plans are in place to encourage junior rugby league in the area.
Sparks added: “This is just the start for what I believe will eventually become a major player in Mirfield.
“Everyone involved is fully committed and I am thrilled to say that plenty more exciting announcements are going to be made very soon.
“We are currently working closely with potential partners to help ensure next season – the first in our history – proves a major success.
“Work is also underway on the recruitment front and details of a launch night, when players will be able to sign up and get involved, will be confirmed in due course.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has assisted in helping the club make it to this very early yet exciting stage.”
Information regarding the club’s base and playing facilities will be confirmed next week, in addition to the unveiling of Mirfield Stags’ honorary president.
