Spenborough Athletics Club celebrated another successful running of the prestigious Spen 20 road race.
A total of 272 athletes from Yorkshire, Lancashire and the North East completed the arduous 20 mile course.
Early rain soon dissipated to leave ideal conditions for distance running for the large field.
David Thompson, running for Barnsley, had a comfortable victory to record one hour 58 minutes and 27 seconds and he was also crowned Yorkshire champion.
Stuart Maycock, from Hallamshire, was the only other athlete to dip under the two-hour mark to take second place and the silver award. Thomas Midgley took third place and the bronze medal.
Leeds City athlete, Susan Partridge, completed a double in the event as she improved on last year’s position by three places and reduced her time by nine seconds. Her time of 2.10.54 secured 11th place overall. As in 2010 she entered the race on the day so was not eligible for the Yorkshire Championships.
Medallists for the women were Gold -Claire Spencer (Kimberworth); silver: Julie Field (Stainland) and Bronze: Helen Cross (Unattached).
The course was different this year as the runners went under the M62 via Wellands Lane instead of going over the motorway across Whitechapel Bridge.
