A decision has been taken to cancel this season’s Yorkshire Cup with clubs facing a fixture pile up caused by the freezing weather.
Cleckheaton were due to entertain local rivals Morley in the quarter-final under floodlights on Wednesday but a decision was made to scrap the tournament 24 hours before.
It comes as a major blow for the Moorenders, who were narrowly beaten in successive semi-finals and had hoped to go a step further in one of the country’s most famous cup competitions.
A statement from Yorkshire RFU secretary Steve Watson said: “At a competitions committee meeting, the committee has regretfully concluded that owing to adverse weather conditions and the outstanding league,promotion/relegation games and play-off fixtures, all of the three Yorkshire Cup competitions for season 2012-2013 are cancelled.
“We regret that this decision has had to be made but it is proving very difficult to arrange fixtures.”
Cleckheaton will now turn all their attentions to mounting a play-off challenge in North One East and they have a rearranged game at Darlington tomorrow, kick off 3pm.
Cleckheaton lie fifth in the table going into the final four games of the season but they are just six points behind second placed Wheatley Hill.
They go to relegated Darlington tomorrow seeking a ninth straight league win and with games against Northern, Keighley and Wheatley Hills to follow, Dave Harrison’s men are still confident of making it into the top two.
