Hundreds of people flocked to the town centre to see Dewsbury’s 1973 Rugby League team handed the Championship trophy again – 40 years after their historic victory.

Heavy Woollen District’s first ever Rugby League Day took place on Saturday ahead of the Festival of World Cups, which is coming to our area this week.

As well as a rugby themed fun day, the 1973 cup was awarded to ex-captain Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson and other members of the squad by Mayor Martin Bolt.

The formal presentation on the town hall steps saw a performance by Dewsbury Rams Cheerleaders, a haka dance by local school children and a rematch staged by the 1973 final team mascots – Roger Ram and Ronnie Rhino.

Members of the original Dewsbury Rugby League team then watched a screening of their historic victory at the New Picture House.
