Step back in time to the flying Forties

Visitors to Brighouse this weekend might think they’d stepped into a time slip as the town goes back to the 1940s.

The Brighouse 1940s Spectacular promises the chance to sit in a Spitfire, ride on a vintage bus, bake 1940s bread, see Churchill and Eisenhower, sing along with George Formby, learn to dance the Lindy Hop, see a variety concert and dance at the Ritz.

Organiser Steven Lord said: “We are aiming to portray the home front during Britain’s finest hour. We are celebrating the good things of that period, the community spirit; make do and mend and entertainment for young and old alike.”

Pre-festival fun starts on Friday night with the Boo Booby Doo Burlesque Cabaret Show at the Civic Hall or the chance to dance the night away at the Ritz ballroom.

Then the weekend’s attractions include vintage military and civilian vehicle displays, a Winston Churchill lookalike, a cine news reel show, performances from 1940s singers and dance lessons with the Back Step Boogie Club, a vintage market and period fairground rides.

Visitors will also have the chance to climb in the cockpit of a full size replica Spitfire and enjoy displays from the Land Army, RAF, Luftwaffe, Dambusters and French Resistance, and sample WI cooking. There’s evening entertainment on Saturday and on Sunday there will be a Spitfire flypast. Visit www.brighouse1940sweekend.co.uk.
