Whether it be spooks or sparks, there’s plenty going on this half-term to keep the little ones entertained – and to suit all budgets

And as Halloween falls within half term, there’s plenty of themed events to keep the little ones (and slightly bigger ones too) entertained.

Mirfield gallery the Creative Arts Hub is running a series of free drop-in spooky workshops to entertain creative kids.

On October 31 and November 1, children can call in to create their own frightening characters and ghoulish puppets. Artists will be on hand to offer help kids create their monstrous masterpieces.

Artist and studio director Mark Milnes said: “We had a really good response [to a recent similar event] and the children loved getting stuck in and making their models. We’re hoping that this will be just as popular and enjoyable for all our visitors.”

The activities run from 10am to 4pm on both days. The sessions are free and no booking is required, although children must be accompanied. The sessions are suitable for all ages.

And on October 30, the hub is putting on an animation workshop at Batley Art Gallery for eight- to 12-year-olds, when artists Karen Stansfield and Damian Clark. Places are limited so booking is essential.

Kids will learn how to use stop motion animation to create a scary tale to share with family and friends, using computer software.

On Wednesday October 30, Oakwell Hall hosts a family activity day, with crafts and activities with a Halloween theme – plus the chance to meet snakes and spiders!

The fun is from 10am-noon and again at 1pm-3pm. The cost is £2 per child, 50p for Kirklees passport holders.

And the hall is at its spooky best the following day for lantern making then a Halloween night walk from 7pm-9pm. Booking is essential, fancy dress optional, and the cost is £7.50 per child which includes one accompanying adult. More adults can go along for £1.

And you can make a splash with Halloween fun on October 31 at Spenborough Pool, Bradford Road, Liversedge.

There will be pumpkin carving, spooky mask making, apple bobbing, colouring and a ghost walk from 1.30pm-4pm, with a swim, dive and spooky slide session running from 2.30pm-4pm.

Children under eight years old must be accompanied by an adult – the adult goes free of charge, entry is £5 per child.

Youngsters can meet some cold-blooded characters at the Mill in Batley. On Tuesday the Academy in the complex hosts Cold Blooded Encounters, who will be bringing snakes, lizards, amphibians and reptiles, from 10am-11am. Entry costs £2 per child; kids must be accompanied by an adult.
