Firms to reap rewards of the Tour De France

The ‘Tour de France effect’ is expected to see a huge rise in the number of people flocking to the area, with businesses in Yorkshire expected to benefit in excess of £100m.

Chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire Gary Verity said while the Grand Depart may have captured the world’s attention, landmarks including Oakwell Hall in Birstall and the Gomersal Park Hotel should keep visitors coming back time and time again.

“The Tour de France – the world’s largest annual sporting event – will be on our doorstep in just days, bringing with it a huge opportunity for our county,” he said.

“Up to two million people could line each of the two Yorkshire stages, and it is estimated that the Grand Départ will be worth in excess of £100 million to the economy.

“The Tour is broadcast to over 190 countries, putting Yorkshire in the global spotlight. Yorkshire is ready and waiting to welcome the world.”

The world’s biggest cycling event hits Yorkshire on July 5 and 6, with hundreds of thousands expected to watch the race in our district.

Kirklees Council announced St George’s Square in Huddersfield and the Sands Recreation Ground in Holmfirth will turn into spectator hubs allowing the public to watch the event for free.

With music, street performers and food and drink stalls, businesses are expected to benefit from the huge crowds coming to the region.

Kirklees Council leader David Sheard said: “We are hosting what we expect will be one of the busiest stretches of the entire route and we have been told to expect in excess of 150,000 visitors that weekend.

“With all those people needing to be fed and watered, we are determined to make sure Kirklees businesses make the most of that opportunity.”
