Five jobs lost as Dewsbury’s Game store closes

The store, in Longcauseway, was one of 277 stores which shut with immediate effect, making 2,104 employees redundant, as the troubled video game group went into administration.

Town Centre manager Andrew Sloman said: “This is incredibly sad for the staff who worked in the store. We spoke to them when we found out the store was closing and passed on our commiserations.”

He said he understood the decision on closure had been made on the grounds of proximity to other stores and there was a large Game store at the White Rose Centre.

“This was the opposite to the decision made by Peacocks, where the store was rescued by the company. However, we still have two other computer game stores in the town centre, that we understand are doing well.

“This remains a challenging time for retail. We will work with property owners Ravenhill Estates and hope to find new tenants as soon as possible. We are not at a tipping point in Dewsbury, there is still a good range of shops and quite a good proportion of them are doing well.”

Administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers said that the retailer had suffered from high fixed costs and an ambitious international expansion and its business has been hit by competition from online-only retailers.

The remaining 333 Game stores remain open as the administrators seek to find a buyer for the business.
