BMW drivers have been voted the nation’s worst by their fellow motorists in a new study.

Owners of the Bavarian premium brand were identified as worse than drivers of Ford Transit vans – for so long the go-to whipping boy for bad driving – cabbies and Audi drivers.

The poll of 2,000 drivers set out to see how drivers perceived each other after new data showed that, per mile, van drivers are the safest on the roads. The data showed that for every 100,000 miles travelled they were involved in 3.8 fewer accidents with injuries than car drivers, despite their stereotype as aggressive and dangerous.

The research by GoCompare found that 21.8 per cent of motorists still felt Transit drivers were the worst on the roads but 24 per cent said BMW drivers were the biggest danger to others.

Black cab drivers finished third in the list of shame, with 14 per cent of motorists picking them out as the worst to encounter.

At the other end of the scale, Lexus owners and Ford Focus drivers were least likely to be considered dangerous, with only 1.5 and 1.9 per cent respectively thinking they were the worst.

The study broke down opinions by age, region and road user type and found that car drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and van drivers all picked out the German brand.

Among younger drivers (18-34) BMW, Audi and cab drivers were all regarded worse than Transit van owners and only those over 45 ranked White Van Man as worse than any other road user.
