Dewsbury doctor retires after 32 years of service

Dr Chandra, who studied at the Madras university in India, came over to the UK in 1982 to continue his studies to be a surgeon.

After taking on a fellowship in general surgery in Edinburgh in 1987, Dr Chandra switched his career over to be a GP, in which he completed his training scheme in Yorkshire.

In 1991, Dr Chandra was then invited to join the Northroad Surgery as a GP partner. He explained how he “came with an open mind” and wanted to establish himself as a “good GP”.

Dr Chandra said: “I enjoyed every moment of my time as a GP serving the local community.

“Though I can’t speak the local ethnic minority languages, I had a fantastic doctor-patient relationship with all groups, which has been reflected on the extraordinary overwhelming thank you messages and retirement cards I had received from patients.

“I wanted to be a family practitioner working closely with my patients, providing holistic care.

“I believe I have gone a long way to achieve that ambition and It has been an amazing memorable journey for me over the past three decades.

“I feel I have set up and achieved high standards of care addressing health inequalities and my GP partners no doubt would strive to continue that role.

“Achieving CQC outstanding rating is the highlight of my career as a GP in Ravensthorpe.

“I thank the past and current staff at North Road Surgery who have worked tirelessly over the decades under my leadership.

“After some break, I plan to continue my role as a GP doing occasional sessional basis as and when required and as the specialist endoscopist at the local hospital for some more time.

“At the same time I am determined to have a quality family life with my dear wife, Beverley, who has been a tremendous support to me all these years. I also wish to travel and enjoy watching cricket.

“I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me over the past 32 years in Northroad and without their support I wouldn’t have been where I am now.

“Finally I wish to thank my parents who had given me all the support and would have been very happy to see me at this time.”

Partners and staff at the North Road Suite said: “Dr Chandra has been the driving force of North Road Suite since his arrival 32 years ago. Working tirelessly for our patients and the wider community.

“We all feel blessed to have worked with such an amazing GP.

“Dr Chandra will be missed by staff and not forgetting his patients, his dedication, passion and knowledge can never be replaced.

“We wish Dr Chandra a long, healthy and happy retirement with the family. He truly does deserve it.”

As well as carrying out his role as a GP at North Road Surgery, Dr Chandra also worked as a surgeon at Dewsbury and District Hospital and then as a GP specialist endoscopist since 1991.

Dr Chandra has also been a cancer lead for North Kirklees for two decades and a local medical committee officer since 2000 and medical secretary for more than eight years.
